What Is Gimkit?
Gimkit is a live learning game that turns any set of questions into a fast-paced classroom competition. Instead of working through a quiz one question at a time, students play in real time: every correct answer earns in-game cash, which they can spend on upgrades and power-ups that shake up the leaderboard.
For teachers, Gimkit doubles as a formative assessment tool, a fun way to check understanding, run test review, and lift student engagement far beyond a worksheet.
How Gimkit Works in the Classroom
Everything starts with a kit, a set of questions on any topic. The teacher launches a live game from that kit and shares a game code. Students join on their own devices, answer questions at their own pace, and earn virtual cash for correct answers. With the leaderboard updating live, the whole room feels more like a game show than a quiz.
Who Uses Gimkit – Teachers & Students
Teachers create and host the games; students join them. Students don’t need an account, just the game code from their teacher. Because Gimkit runs in the web browser, it works on Chromebooks, tablets, phones, and computers, so the whole class can play together.
How to Play Gimkit Live
Joining a game takes less than a minute. Here is the full flow, step by step.
1
Step 1 – Join a Game with a Code
Go to gimkit.com/join, type in the game code your teacher shares, and hit Join. Enter your display name, or use the Nickname Generator, then wait in the lobby until the host starts the game. More about game codes
2
Step 2 – Answer Questions & Earn Money
Each correct answer earns you money, in-game virtual cash, not real money. Quick answers and streaks boost your earnings, so accuracy and speed both pay off.
3
Step 3 – Use Upgrades and Power-Ups
Spend your virtual cash on upgrades and power-ups to multiply future earnings or mix up the leaderboard. Knowing your answers is half the game, spending wisely is the other half.
Can You Play Gimkit Solo?
Gimkit is built for live multiplayer games, so the classic experience is playing together with your class in real time. Solo play is possible too: teachers can set assignments for students to complete on their own. Assignments are part of Gimkit Pro.
How to Host a Gimkit Game
Hosting is for teachers, or anyone with a Gimkit account. Pick a kit, choose a game mode, share the game code, and open the lobby. Students join in seconds with no accounts and no setup. For the complete walkthrough, read our guide: How to Host a Gimkit Game.
Create Your Own Kit
A kit is simply a set of questions, the content behind your game. Build one from scratch, import questions you already have, or start from a ready-made kit and make it yours.
Start a Live Game from the Dashboard
From your Gimkit dashboard, choose a kit, select a mode, and launch. Your screen displays the game code, QR code, and join link to share with the class, then press start and the game show begins.
